Beacon Award
Collyer`s Beacon Science
On the strength of its Ofsted Grade One Science provision, the college has been awarded Beacon Status for Science and is currently working on several strands of initiatives:
- The production of teaching units and resources for GCSE Electronics, Physics, Biology, Geology and general Science. These are being trialled and then rolled out to secondary and special schools in the Horsham/Crawley area.
- The production of teaching units and resources for AS Level Electronics
- Working with The University of Sussex and its linked science-based industries
on the provision of similar units and resources for extension work at A Level Sciences; an input into the University`s PGCE Science course; and an e-mentoring scheme between graduate science students and aspiring science pupils. - Direct support and training to schools in Horsham and Crawley area, enhanced by ICT
- The wider dissemination of material through dedicated Beacon links on the college`s website.
Collyer`s / Mercer`s Technology Project
Through the relationship the college enjoys with the Mercer`s Company, additional funding has been given us to support the teaching of Technology in local Primary and Secondary Schools. This takes the form of
- Funding and purchasing advice given to local schools for technology kit and software
- The provision of technology sessions at the college for Year 6 pupils and their staff
- On-going advice and support to teachers of technology in the Horsham area
- Use of Industry standard CNC equipment to enhance staff training.
Materials from this project will be more generally disseminated through web links. The project complements our Beacon Science work in helping to support and encourage a through-line from Primary, through Secondary, to college and to Higher Education for students in the area studying Science and Technology courses. As such, it is making a direct contribution to the South East and national skills agenda.
