News Collyer’s Host Science Day 12.08.2019
Collyer’s students recently relished the opportunity to pick the brains of guest speakers and experts covering the fields of science, engineering, mathematics and IT, as the college hosted one of the largest Sixth Form College science careers events in the country. The day was a huge success and offered informative and inspiring presentations within a packed schedule.
Head of Faculty for Mathematics and Science, Dr Rob Hussey explained: “Students use the Science Careers Day as a great way of exploring careers they may not have never previously considered. Careers advice is enormously important for our students and this event provides a platform allowing students to ask any questions they may have to those currently working in the industry.”
The event welcomed professionals from backgrounds including: the petroleum industry, chemical research and applications, degrees and careers in chemical engineering; patent attorney careers, physiotherapy, medicine, ecology careers and doing a biology degree; drug discovery, laboratory-based careers in research, neurology and veterinary medicine; educational psychology, mental health nursing, clinical psychology and occupational psychology. In addition, other areas covered included: maths in engineering, learning analytics, research mathematics and maths in investment; wildlife volunteering, geology and oceanography.
Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley said: “The Science Careers Day is a fantastic opportunity for Collyer’s students to be given up-to-date, topical advice from those currently working across a range of science and technology related industries. Massive thanks to our inspiring experts and to Dr Rob Hussey and his team for all of their hard work in making today possible.”
Dr Hussey added: “With a speakers presenting across 8 subject areas in the Faculty of Science and Maths, the Collyer’s Science Careers Day 2019 was another spectacular success. The whole faculty have been incredible, particularly Sally Pontin, without whom none of this would have been possible.
“Huge thanks also to our speakers who have clearly captivated our students. It’s always tricky to know what jobs are available in any field, so it was great that the event could feature an impressive breadth of presentations covering a very wide range of careers in science, technology and maths.”
The visiting experts also included many ex-Collyer’s students, now studying and working in the areas of Science, Engineering and IT, who kindly gave up their time to come back and talk to the next generation.
