News Gunn Talks Career Aims 21.02.2022
Collyer’s welcomed Al Gunn back to the college, for a live session focussing on sales, marketing, and employability. Al took part in a lively and entertaining tv-style Q&A with Deputy Principal Steve Martell and Collyer’s students, modestly charting his meteoric 40-year career journey and offering honest advice about how students can compete in the future. Students asked questions about making tough career decisions, personal branding, role models and the life of a business consultant and sales director responsible for huge teams.
During the event, Al and the group reflected on the world of work when Al started his career back in 1980, touching on the changes in working patterns and technology to 2022, and the kind of jobs the students could be doing in 2062!
Al Gunn told the students: “I really enjoy these sessions as it does seem that they do add value. I’ve been inspired by Steve’s inspirational approach and style and by what he and this college are trying to do for the students. There is a very supportive, positive culture at Collyer’s.”
Rebecca Adams, Director of Progression at Collyer’s, said: “It was incredibly generous of Al to give up so much of his valuable time take part in today’s session.”
Steve Martell said: “Colossal thanks to Al for actively making a difference. He really is one of the good guys. And, as the students say, absolute ‘box office’ in the lecture theatre!”
Rebecca added: “Alongside the taught employability sessions, the college’s numerous progression activities this year will include inspiring guest speakers, mock interviews, employability skills workshops, ‘Next Steps’ careers evenings, careers fair, work experience, HE events, Oxbridge sessions, and a host of other trips and activities in conjunction with key national, regional and local partner organisations.”
Collyer’s Vice Principal (Pastoral) Andrea John added: “We are incredibly grateful to Al Gunn for his continued support of the important employability work we are doing here at Collyer’s. He is enjoying a massively successful career in marketing and sales, and it is fantastic that he’s willing to inspire and actively help the next generation.”
