News Students Navigate Aeronautical Careers 22.10.2024
Collyer’s students recently took part in the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre for the Make The Future Yours! Careers in the Aerospace, Defence, and Space Industries event.
Sarah Tillier, Collyer’s Work Experience Co-ordinator, explained: “Held in partnership with Farnborough International and sponsored by The Careers & Enterprise Company Hampshire Careers Hub, the aim is to inspire and inform the next generation of professionals about the vast opportunities within these dynamic fields.”
In the main theatre, Adam Orme from Trinity Technologies kicked off with an overview of the Aerospace, Defence, and Space Industries, highlighting the latest advancements and future trends. Jess Hamer from the Institute of Physics emphasised the crucial role of physics in developing essential workplace skills, encouraging students to pursue STEM subjects. Wing Commander Dave Black from UK Space Command then shared his fascinating and varied career journey, offering students a unique perspective on the diverse opportunities within the space sector. Naomi Attrill from Hampshire Careers Hub concluded the session by outlining various career pathways and opportunities available within these industries, providing students with valuable guidance on how to navigate their future careers.
After the talks, students had the opportunity to explore the exhibition and demonstration area, where they engaged with representatives from a wide range of organisations. Exhibitors included: The Civil Aviation Authority, AWE, PA Consulting, Viasat, Qinetiq, Babcock, and many more. These interactions allowed students to gain hands-on experience and insights into the practical applications of their studies. In addition, the group participated in a Mars Rover time trial, testing their skills in a simulated Martian environment, and spoke with members of the UCLR Rocket Team, who shared their experiences and projects in rocketry.
The event also featured educational institutions like Portsmouth University, Alton College – HSDC, and UCL, offering students information on further education and training opportunities. Additionally, organisations including The Royal Aeronautical Society and Space Careers provided resources and advice on professional development and career planning.
Sarah added: “This event has been an incredible opportunity for our students to see the breadth of careers available in these industries. The hands-on experiences and direct interactions with industry professionals have truly opened their eyes to the possibilities that lie ahead.
“The Make the Future Yours! event was a resounding success, leaving students inspired and better equipped to pursue careers in the Aerospace, Defence, and Space Industries. The combination of expert talks and interactive exhibits provided a comprehensive overview of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead for these aspiring professionals.”
