News Protective Gear Donated to Local Care Homes 01.05.2020

Collyer’s have donated personal protection equipment to local care homes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Deputy Principal Steve Martell explained: “Students and staff were keen to support their local community and decided to donate personal protection items, that would normally have been used in science lessons. The idea came from Paul Clarke, a much loved member of the Collyer’s community, who taught at the college for many years and subsequently managed our learning support team.”

Sally Ponton from Collyer’s science department directed Estates Manager Martin Emery and his team to the goggles, gloves and other items, which were then distributed to Aniska Lodge, Kings Court, Oakhill and Ashtonleigh care homes.

Paul Clarke said: “Some nursing homes have staff off sick and no hope of replacing them with agency staff. The situation is as challenging as anything you can imagine.”

Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley said: “Medicine and health and social care related professions are still our most popular progression aims for our students.

“The students were delighted that equipment that they would have been using in the college laboratories will be used in this way.”
