Careers Events and Employer-led Sessions

Wednesday 12 February 2020  (6.30pm-8.30pm) – Not Going to Uni (NG2U)

This FREE event is for students and their parents to discover the available pathways for those who are unsure about taking the conventional UCAS route to university.  There will be several large employers and providers present, each offering sponsored professional examination/degree/apprenticeship schemes alongside gap year, work experience or direct employment opportunities.There will be two sittings to accommodate the expected numbers – 18.30 (Q&A panel in Duckering Hall, followed by time to view the stands) and 18.45 (for stands in Sports Hall, with Q&A panel starting at 19.30).

Please note that the car park at Collyer’s will be extremely busy for this event, but additional parking is also available in The Pavilions and certain side roads near to the college (please check local signs regarding restrictions and any payment requirements).

Public transport links will also be available.

Challenge of Management –  Friday 3rd July 2020 (tbc) whole day event at South Lodge Hotel

This FREE event is for both first and second year students, across all subjects, to increase Employability Skills by working with Business Advisers from large employers including HSBC, Kreston Reeves, RSA, Nestle, PVL, Accenture, Assurity Consulting & Wakefield’s Jewellers.  Students can hone their problem solving and decision making skills, work as a team to overcome mental challenges, participate in various leadership and management tasks.  FREE food and drink, plus PRIZES for the winning teams and individuals who make an outstanding contribution on the day.  Invitations to book places will be sent out nearer the time.

Employability Programme:

This is a timetabled Programme of study for those second year students identified as unlikely to go on to university via the conventional UCAS route.  Taught by Steve Martell (Deputy Principal), the Programme involves many employer-led sessions on CV and interview skills, mock assessment centres, psychometric testing, various alternatives to (and different ways in which to access) university with the key focus on generating  the skills, knowledge and attitude students require in order to be ‘work ready’.  Any students who are interested in signing-up to this Programme should chat to their Tutor.

Careers activities which have taken place around Collyer’s:

• RSA delivered a Mock Assessment Centre for BTec Level 2 Business and IT students
• Mock interviews took place for BTec Level 2 Sports students
• National Citizen Service came to Collyer’s to talk to students about their personal development scheme
• RSA delivered a session on Time Management & Study Skills
• Assurity Consulting came into Collyer’s to deliver a session focusing on CV and Interview tips and techniques.
• Young Start-up Talent presented on their scheme for students to compete in a Dragon’s Den style for a £50k prize for a business idea.
• Education and Employers Taskforce brought current apprentices into Collyer’s to explain what they have gained from the apprenticeship process.
• A Level Drama ran an onsite workshop in Renaissance Theatre
• BTEC Level 3 Art Diploma students participate in the annual “Painting in Hospitals” exhibition at Horsham Hospital
• BTEC Level 2 Art students worked alongside a local Graphic Design company to produce artistic visuals to accompany musicians’ artwork.
• A guest speaker from Major Crime, Sussex Police came into college to speak to our A Level Law students
• A Dietetics Day took place at East Surrey Hospital for a range of A Level Food, Nutrition and Health students
• A Level Drama had an on-site professional performances (with accompanying workshops) in Kathakali Theatre
• A visit to Horsham Hospital by some of our Health & Social Care students to talk to one of the midwives
• A Level Drama ran a week of Physical Theatre Workshops, conducted by an ex-student Jess Jackson
• A visit by two Health & Social Care students to Ingfield Manor, to shadow some of our past students
• A Level Drama participated in a Careers and Lighting Workshop by the Guildford School of Speech and Drama
• Visits by various Health & Social Care students to QE2 School
• QE2 student working at Collyer’s every Wednesday afternoon to achieve their Food Hygiene Certificates
• A Partner from a local Law Firm has been mentoring an A Level Law student
• General Work Experience for a range of Health & Social Care students at East Surrey Hospital.
• Visit from Steve McKeown (microbiologist Novartis) to talk to A Level Food, Nutrition and Health students about “Diet for Peak Sports Performance”
• Work experience at Holbrook Primary for Health & Social Care students
• The Mass Observation Unit came in to talk to A Level History students about their work in research
• Careers leaflet for historians that features some of our past A Level History students
• Conservation Sussex wildlife trust talk to A Level Environmental Science students
