News Jeremy Quin MP Visits Collyer’s 04.01.2021

Last term we welcomed Jeremy Quin MP to the college. Jeremy, who is the Member of Parliament for the Horsham constituency, popped in to meet new Principal Dan Lodge and discuss the college’s response to COVID-19 and exciting plans for the future.

Jeremy and Dan also discussed the new Heritage Project at Collyer’s, which will chart the college’s fascinating history as the institution approaches 500 years of teaching!

Collyer’s was founded during the reign of Henry VIII in 1532 when London merchant and Mercer, Richard Collyer specified in his will that a schoolhouse should be built in Horsham for 60 boys. The college has grown with the town and has remained at the heart of the community for nearly five centuries, moving to its current location in the late 1800’s. Jeremy, who read History at Oxford, was able to offer some valuable insight into the significance of the plaques that adorn the front of the old school building at Collyer’s, bordering Hurst Road. Dan Lodge was also keen to draw on Jeremy’s impressive knowledge of Tudor history.

Dan Lodge said: “It was a pleasure to meet with Jeremy and he was hugely supportive of our response to these challenging times. I’m also grateful to him for lending his historical expertise, as we discover more about our college’s past through the new Heritage Project.”
