Accounting A Level
Board: AQA
Syllabus: A Level (7127)
About the Subject
A Level Accounting covers elements of both Financial Accounting – which is essentially keeping score of how a business is doing, and Management Accounting – which involves using financial information to make decisions on how to improve the business in the future.
Specific topics that you will study are, double entry bookkeeping, the main underlying accounting principles, construction and analysis of final accounts, budgeting, capital investment appraisal and the implications of ethical issues.
If any of the above topics are of interest to you, then Accounting A Level is a course that you should consider.
Learning Styles
Accounting classes will involve reinforcement of the numerate techniques taught as well as interpretation of data and construction of reports with recommendations as to what the business ought to do.
Workshop sessions allow the students to choose the areas which they need to focus on, enabling a more individualistic approach to the learning experience.
Homework is set on a regular basis; coupled with private study (pro-study) so that learners read up in advance of the lessons.
Research into current business and financial related news (reading the quality financial press (online)/watching documentary business television) is encouraged.
Subject Combinations and Progression
Accounting is a subject that combines well with subjects such as Business, Maths and Economics.
Accounting provides a clear route into employment. Students can progress straight into a training contract with local or national employers and a number of our previous students have done so. You could work in all sorts of businesses from charities to large corporations as well as an accounting firm. A financial background is a real asset when looking for employment.
A newly qualified chartered accountant can easily be paid £45,000.
Alternatively, you can head on to university.
Collyer’s has recently hosted an Accountancy Careers Talk from a local Accounting firm.
