About this course

We offer English Functional Skills at Entry Level 1 for learners who have English as a second language. This course helps to develop a basic level of practical and transferable skills in English, which will be useful in work and life. This qualification include 3 units:

 

  • Speaking, Listening and Communication
  • Reading
  • Writing

 

You will learn a range of skills including:

  • Saying the names of the letters of the alphabet
  • Making requests and responding to simple questions
  • Participating in discussions
  • Reading simple sentences
  • Using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

 

You should expect to complete 2 hours of homework per week in addition to class attendance and exam revision.

Entry requirements

You must have a basic level of English to join this course.

Delivery

Learners will attend weekly lessons in college. This course may incorporate an element of live remote lessons where appropriate.   It is recommended that you have access to a PC, laptop or other suitable device.

Learners also benefit from access to the college library during our evening opening times, including computers, study stations, print-based and electronic learning materials, printers and scanners.

Assessment

There are three assessments for these courses: a speaking and listening assessment; a reading exam and a writing exam

 

Progression

Learners may progress on to the next level Functional Skills course or GCSE English.

Students are required to attend a College induction on the evening of Thursday 8th September

Fees
