About the course
This qualification is designed to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental well-being. Successful completion of the required units will allow the learner to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health. It will also support progression into relevant employment within the health and social care sector.
You will cover elements such as:
- Understanding the context of mental health and wellbeing
- Promotion of mental health and wellbeing
- Mental health problems: associated issues and consequences
- Understanding mental ill health
- Working in mental health
Entry requirements
Students who do not hold GCSE English at grade C/4 or Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications will be invited to sit an assessment to ensure that they have suitable skills for this qualification.
Assessment
Assessment is via written work. Work is submitted and assessed via an electronic portfolio, which demonstrates how you have met the assessment criteria for the course.
You should expect to complete at least 3 hours of homework per week in addition to class attendance.
Delivery
Learners will attend weekly lessons in college or live ‘remote’ (online) lessons where appropriate. It is recommended that you have access to a PC, laptop or other suitable device.
Learners also benefit from access to the college library during our evening opening times, including computers, study stations, print-based and electronic learning materials, printers and scanners.
Progression
You could move onto higher level studies within the field or use it as a springboard to employment in the Mental Health Sector.

Fees
For this course, students may self-fund the course fees, apply for an Advanced Learner Loan or be eligible for full funding under the Government’s Free Level 3 Courses for Jobs offer.
A £50 non-refundable deposit is payable at the point of booking and the remainder of the course fees are due one week before the course start. Students can apply to pay the balance in two instalments.
Advanced Learner Loans are available for this course. These loans are repayable when you finish your course and earn more than £27,295 per annum. This figure is subject to change, so please ensure you check the details with the Student Loans Company when applying for an Advanced Learner Loan.
Please note the maximum advanced learner loan for this course is £811.
This course may be free to learners if they:
- Are unemployed
- Earn less than £20,319 gross annual salary
- Do not have a full level 3 qualification
