OCA NEWS OCA Summer Reunion – Arundel Tour 09.06.2024
On 9th June 2024, a small group of OCs gathered in Arundel for the annual Summer Reunion. The day began at the Maison Dieu ruins, located by the river near the bridge. These remnants are part of what was once a Dominican Priory, dissolved by Henry VIII in the 16th century. While often misattributed to a medieval hospice, the true Maison Dieu site lies west of the Parish Church.
David Simmonds and Paul Herington, both from Arundel, led a fascinating walking tour, sharing their local expertise and rich anecdotes. The group explored the heart of the town, where they were introduced to Arundel Castle, one of the most prominent features of the town. The Castle, with roots dating back to 1067, has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk for centuries. The current Gothic-style structure, rebuilt between 1875 and 1900, incorporates medieval elements such as the original motte and the Barbican towers from the 12th century.
The tour also covered Arundel Cathedral, a stunning Victorian Gothic building completed in 1873. Built by Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, the Cathedral honours Phillip Howard, 13th Earl of Arundel, who was canonized in 1970. Its grand architecture, including the impressive rose window and the spire that was added later, makes it a striking sight in the town.
The group took a break for an excellent Sunday lunch at The St Mary’s Gate Inn, situated near the Cathedral. The Inn itself has long been a central meeting point in Arundel and provided the perfect spot for catching up and relaxing.
The day ended with tea, biscuits, and a visit to the Arundel Museum, a small but impressive institution that encapsulates the town’s long history, from its ancient roots through to its more modern developments. The museum provided further insights into Arundel’s key landmarks and historical significance.
The reunion was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, experience the rich heritage of Arundel, and enjoy a memorable day filled with history, great company, and laughter.
